There hasn’t been a bigger topic in the past year when it comes to business compliance with the government than the new overtime laws that were signed into law in May 2016 with a compliance date of Dec. 1, 2016. Days before the law is to take effect a judge out of Sherman, Texas, upheld an injunction to suspend the overtime changes. This was unprecedented. Since we’re in the 11th hour of complying, regardless where our feelings fall on the law, there’s been a lot of hard work and money spent to bring businesses that want to do the right thing into compliance, all while having the threat of penalties being handed out Dec. 1 for non-compliance.

It’s understandable that there are a lot of mixed emotions among some businesses and politicians about this decision, but we cannot forget about the employees that are caught in the wash and are going to be very confused by what has happened. The current advice that is being handed down is to stay the course with what you have implemented and handle what hasn’t been implemented on a case-by-case scenario. I will keep you informed with the likely appeal that will take place shortly and any results from that appeal. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me individually if needed and ask any questions that you may have on behalf of yourself or a client.

It has been my commitment to make sure we are always on the front end of policy and the law that will impact your business. I appreciate each of my clients and strategic partners, and I look forward to the battle of policy change that’s ahead as we continue to position your business for success around ever-changing regulation.
